Is it possible to create an stl file from surface models in autocad 2006, or only Rhino?

I can create stl files for rapid prototyping from solid models in Autocad, but I would like the option of creating stl files from surface models in Autocad.

I have been told that my best bet is to switch to Rhino (another CAD application) because Autocad just can’t do it. Is that true?

Can Autocad export surface models to any other format than stl that I might be able to use in my Roland Modela4 software, such as .3ds?

Nigel

That’s the only way I’ve been able to do it.

Mammoth Stereolithography Video from Materialise

The technology

Starting from a 3D image, a part is built slice by slice from bottom to top, in a vessel of liquid polymer that hardens when struck by a laser beam.
Schematic overview of the stereolithography process

Starting from your STL file, the required supports for overhangs and cavities are automatically generated in the model under construction. The support and model files are then “cut” into thin horizontal slices and programmed into the stereolithography machine.

This machine then uses a computer controlled laser to draw the bottom cross section onto the surface of a liquid polymer that hardens where struck by the laser. The part is then lowered to a depth corresponding to the section’s thickness and the next cross section is then drawn directly on top of the previous one. This is repeated until the part is finished.

STL PRO DEMO

TransMagic STL PRO is a 3D CAD data repair and exchange software application designed specifically for medical, digital manufacturing, rapid prototyping (RP) and 3D printing industries. Anyone needing to use STL (stereolithography) files can:
- VIEW a wide variety of native and neutral 3D files without CAD software or licenses.
- REPAIR geometric errors to create water-tight solid models.
- TRANSLATE models to accurate STL files for rapid prototyping, tooling and manufacturing.

It’s easier to repair a CAD model than an STL file!
